A Scene to RememberGu QiubeiShanghai International Studies UniversityAdvisor: Gong Longsheng Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today I would like to begin with a story. There was once a physical 1) therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a 2) census about mountain 3) gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching and being put into the zoo. She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled their babies. Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life. To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist instry at the cost of our ecoenvironment. Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising instries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren't natural anymore. Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal. Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks. All these 7) appalling(令人震驚的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蝕) our resources. Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment. Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(殘疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. Why? Because they care. Because they still want their Mother Nature back. Because they know it still belongs to them. This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it's all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish. The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer. And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation. Once again, I have come to think of Mrs. Dian Fossey be- cause it's with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world. And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it. Thank you very much.

Topic:Thank you very much. Now, here is your topic for impromptu speech. This is kind of challengeable. Nowadays, many students fall in love high school. Do you support this behavior? And will such love relationships last long? And is it good for students』 future development, your idea, please?

Ok, thank you very much. (Here come several sentences in British accent so obvious & typical)
First of all, I would like to say that this is rather a prevalent phenomenon these days. We can see that a lot of students around me are having this kind of 「young puppy love」. And I think it』s utterly normal for them because I can understand why they do this. They are trying to seek recognition from the other sex instead of from academic success. However, I』m utterly against it because I think it is utterly detrimental to our future development and also it will never last long. First of all, we can understand that we are still rather immature psychologically at this current stage and most important thing for love is that we cannot actually fully understand what love is. And for the most important part is that I can see students around me having puppy love simply messing around seeking pleasure instead of making commitments. And because of this kind of flimsy attitude, I think all they could do is to mess around and that』s why puppy love dies in a blink of an eye. And for example, I could see Mary would be dating David on the first day of November. However, two days later, she is kissing Tom on the inside of campus. And that』s very normal these days.
And secondly, I think it』s because for puppy love, it is very detrimental to our future development because, at this particularly stage of our time, what we should do is to dedicate our valuable time to studying and participating in activities in order to go to a wonderful college in the future. And time is less and because of that I think Shakespeare once said that love is blind. And a lot of young students sort of lost themselves in this procere. And that』s very, very costly.
And so in conclusion, I would like to view this problem from the view of economics. We are making rational choices; we should consider the molar benefit and molar cost of its particular problem. And in the case of puppy love, I see the molar cost exceeds the molar benefit a lot. And that』s the reason why I think this is something that should not be approbated and for the case of those people who are thinking that true love might be lost through this way. I always say that true love can wait, because if not, it would not be true love at all. And we will have nothing to lose. And that』s the reason why I have kind of opinion, thank you.

1. My question has to do with faith and passion. In your speech you say that a billion times in your life you had the faith and the passion for a specific career in that time. What makes no different you feel that』s the way you want to go professionally is to be a great lawyer but young people nowadays tend to have a thought one day to be this and the next day to be that. So what makes no different from the way you were before?
Ok, thank you very much.
I think the reason why I choose to be a lawyer in the future I choose to pursue this career is different from choosing to become a pianist and a surgeon is because there was one time that I think this kind of career is the one that best fits me. I am a sort of a debater in my early days and I have this kind of technique in order to pursue this career. And that is the practical reason why I think this is why, that this career is best fits me.
And secondly it is because personally I have watched a movie called 「the time to kill」 and it was about a case where a black girl got rapped and the only lawyer who stepped forward to fight for her is a white lawyer. And the whole process is very complicated. But what I see from that story is that I』m very interested in human rights and I want to argue for those people who have their rights trampled and their freedom, how to say, stealed(stole) away and if I could be that lawyer although sometimes I may have to go against my will and argue for a murderer, a rapper, a criminal, I will always remember that I have taken an oath that I have to do this job. This is my obligation.
And I think because of these reasons I have this passion because I love this job and I have the technique because I』m a debater and speaker in public situations and that』s why I think this is different from the other choices. That』s all, thank you.

2. If love can be mission, it』s economic benefits and economic disadvantages. Is that actually love? And what is love?
Ok, thank you for your question first. I think love is something that cannot be really measured qualifiedly. But the reason why I brought up the terms, terminology in economics is because it first jumped to my mind when I think about making rational choices. And Love is something that makes us become irrational. And that is the reason why I applied this two terminology. But I think for to answer your question of what love is, personally, I would say that viewing from my parents』 view and also looking at different cases around me and from novels and films and movies, I think love is about commitment. It is something; it』s responsibility instead of just love for the first sight because if you believe in love in the first sight you should believe that it would be gone in an instantly away. And because of that, I think love is something that should be taken at heart. It is not just physical attraction, because one day it would die out. But what makes love go, goes on forever is this kind of responsibility that we have to shoulder on our shoulder. And it』s something that we should not be just giving it away instantly. And that is what I think is love. That』s all, thank you.
